STEFAN DOWSING

Stefan Dowsing is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Málaga, Spain, whose work explores the boundaries between perception, nature, technology, and the unseen. His work has been exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate Gallery, and The Photographers’ Gallery in London, as well as in venues throughout Poland, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and the United States. In 2014, he was artist in residence at the Mark Rothko Museum in Latvia, where five of his paintings became part of the museum’s collection.

Beginning with pencil drawings or iPad sketches, Dowsing develops his work through a combination of traditional and digital processes, using tools such as Illustrator and Photoshop Painting to expand the possibilities of painting. Color, surface, texture, and light are central to his practice, creating intricate conversations between the organic and inorganic and producing compositions that are simultaneously abstract, seductive, and contemplative.

At the heart of Dowsing’s work is a fascination with what exists beyond the limits of human perception. Inspired in part by ultraviolet photography and the hidden fluorescence revealed in the natural world, he considers how much of reality remains invisible to the naked eye. For Dowsing, art offers another means of approaching that hidden realm—suggesting what may exist beyond what our senses allow us to see.

His recent work further investigates the imperfect mechanisms through which we experience the world: sight, memory, interpretation, and the brain’s attempt to translate what it receives. Stillness and silence become important elements within these compositions, creating spaces that exist beyond the constant activity of the mind.

Dowsing is equally intrigued by the underlying systems that generate nature—the structures and patterns behind landscape, sea, and sky rather than simply their visible forms. Like an algorithm capable of producing extraordinary complexity from a simple set of instructions, these unseen systems inform his visual language. His work invites the viewer into an intuitive encounter with color, composition, and mystery, creating a connection that can be felt before it is fully understood.
